Tree Characteristics & Size

  • Mature Height: 10 to 18 feet (easily maintained shorter with minimal summer pruning)
  • Mature Width: 10 to 20 feet with a spreading, flat-topped, or semi-weeping shape
  • Chill Hours: Requires approximately 400 to 600 chill hours
  • Hardiness Zones: Thrives in USDA Zones 4 through 9 (depending on the rootstock, such as semi-dwarf Citation)
  • Bearing Age: Typically begins producing fruit within 2 to 4 years of planting [1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6]

Fruit Description

  • Skin & Flesh: Reddish-purple to orangy-yellow mottled skin with sweet, juicy amber-to-golden-yellow flesh.
  • Texture & Type: Firm and crunchy flesh; semi-freestone pit.
  • Harvest Time: Ripens mid-season, generally from mid-July to August.
  • Uses: Ideal for fresh eating, grilling, canning, jams, and baking.

Care & Pollination

  • Sunlight: Full sun (at least 6 hours daily). 
  • Soil: Well-drained, fertile soil enriched with organic matter. 
  • Pollination: Most Burbank plum trees are not fully self-fertile and yield better with a cross-pollinator nearby, such as Santa Rosa, Methley, Burgundy, or Ozark Premier.
