Size: Reaches about 45 feet in height with a 30 to 40-foot spread.
Form: Upright, symmetrical, and rounded to oval crown.
Foliage: Dense, glossy, dark green five-lobed leaves during spring and summer that transform into a vibrant burnt-orange to red color in the fall.
Growth Rate: Moderate to fast for a sugar maple, especially outperforming traditional northern sugar maples in drier climates.
Growing Requirements & Tolerances
Sunlight: Prefers full sun.
Soil: Thrives in well-drained loam or average soils; handles higher pH/alkaline soils well.
Hardiness & Resistance: Highly resistant to heat, drought, and leaf tatter. It performs exceptionally well in the southern plains and Midwest where standard sugar maples struggle with summer heat.
Pruning Tip: Prune only during summer after leaves have fully developed, as pruning in late winter or early spring can cause heavy sap bleeding.
Cautions: Intolerant of heavy salt spray or severe soil compaction, and should not be planted directly under power lines due to its mature height.
