Key Features

  • Appearance: Features wavy, upward-spiraling branches, twisted twigs, and curly green leaves that turn yellow in the fall.
  • Winter Color: After the first frost in autumn or winter, the bark on the young stems and twigs intensifies into brilliant shades of red, scarlet, and orange.
  • Size: Reaches a mature height of 25 to 35 feet and a spread of 15 to 25 feet.
  • Floral Use: The unique contorted and colorful branches are widely harvested for fresh or dried floral and holiday arrangements.

Growing Requirements

  • USDA Hardiness Zones: Zones 4a to 8b (tolerates cold temperatures down to -20°F).
  • Sunlight: Full sun to light shade (at least 6 hours of direct sunlight daily for the best red stem color).
  • Soil: Prefers consistently moist, well-drained clay, loam, silt, or amended sandy soil (pH 6.0–8.0). It tolerates periodic wet soil or near-water locations like ponds and streams.
  • Maintenance: Fast-growing and low-to-moderate maintenance, though annual pruning or coppicing helps encourage vibrant new red wood for winter.
